In Japan in the 1980's, the term A, B, C, D was often used as a euphemistic metaphor for the degree of sexual intimacy achieved in intimate encounters or relationships between lovers.
Description of each letter representation is as follows:
A: Any form of mouth to mouth kissing, especially "French" kissing.
B: Feeling or groping of breasts or genitalia, either through clothing or directly skin to skin.
C: Oral stimulation or "fingering" of genitalia.
D: Penetrative intercourse.
- In American culture a similar system was used using Baseball euphemisms such as 1st Base, 2nd Base, 3rd Base and 4th Base/Home Run as metaphors to describe the degree of intimacy.
- In Chapter 36, Motoko accuses Mitsune of possessing "Other Teamly" tendencies after Mitsune had attempted to look at Motoko's breasts; using a sporting metaphor to insinuate that Mitsune had homosexual, or specificaly lesbian, tendencies. The "teams" in this case being Heterosexual and Homosexual.
